Overview

Are you looking for one Introductory course that gives you all the essential information you need in order to set up a successful childminding business?

Completing this course along with a full paediatric first aid course will give you all the training you need to register as a childminder with Ofsted or a Childminding Agency.

The course contains 5 modules for you to complete at a time that suits you.

The EYFS states that 'Childminders must have completed training which helps them to understand and implement the EYFS before they can register with Ofsted or a Childminder agency.'

This course covers all the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), including Safeguarding, necessary for registration as a childminder with Ofsted or a childminding agency, plus extra information that will help you build a high quality and sustainable childminding business. The requirements for Ofsted are the same wherever you live in England, so whichever county you live in, if you are going to register as a childminder with Ofsted or with a childminding agency, this course is for you.

This course is also Common Core compliant. The government say the 'Common Core of Skills and Knowledge' are necessary for working with children in any childcare setting.

All Childminding UK training is Ofsted recognised, written specifically for the unique role of the childminder.

Description

Each module has a multiple-choice knowledge test at the end which you need to pass in order to print off your certificate for that module. The course includes downloadable course handouts. Once you have completed all 5 modules, you will be able to print off your Childminder Introductory Training Certificate too, which you will need to show to Ofsted or your childminder agency.

There are no assignments or requirements for written tests to pass this course as assessment is all in the knowledge tests. Each module is likely to take around 3 hours to complete. We suggest that you complete the modules in the following order:

  1. Understanding and Working with the EYFS A step by step journey through the EYFS which explains how the requirements should be implemented in a childminding setting

  2. Recording Children’s Development Includes observing and assessing children and planning next steps, linking observations to the areas and aspects of learning and characteristics of effective learning. Set out on the EYFS

  3. Safeguarding Children Introduces the relevant documentation you need to know about and covers how to recognise signs and symptoms of abuse and how to record and refer concerns. It also covers information about Prevent Duty, Female Genital Mutilation, Child Sexual Exploitation, Breast Ironing, Gang Activity- including County Lines and Signs of Safety which is an international process that has been adopted by many areas of England. It has gained course approval from the Northamptonshire Local Safeguarding Children Board. For childminders who will employ others, it includes a safeguarding children employers responsibility handout.

  4. Developing Children’s Learning Information to help you fully understand and support children’s learning. There are 3 main topics: Child Development (including mental health and Attachment Theory), Equality diversity and inclusion and Play.

  5. Leading and Managing a Childminding Setting All you need to know about the business aspects and practical issues of running a successful childminding business including information about how best to market your business, how to comply with tax and insurance requirements and much more

Childminding UK online training is available to you to either complete all at once or re-visit as many times as you need to depending on the time you have available. Unlike some online courses, there are no limits to how many times you can retake the Knowledge Test at the end of the course.

During the course, Childminding UK staff are available to answer any question about the course or as you move in to registering as a childminder.

It is also Common Core compliant- Common Core Skills are those that the Govt. suggests should be completed by anyone working with children. A full Level 3 qualification will take around 18 months to complete. There is no requirement for childminders to have a full qualification. Hope this helps.

Lisa asked:

Hi, I already have several childcare qualifications from Level 1-4 in different areas do I need this course as well to be a childminder or not. Lisa

Answer:

This will depend on when you achieved your qualifications. If after 2008, you will have covered the EYFS and so most will still be valid. You may need to update your Safeguarding Training as this needs refreshing every 2 years and childminders need the DSL element. You will need to complete the Leading and Managing Module as this is sector specific to childminders. Childminding UK does sell these modules individually if you visit the shop

Can you work as a Teaching assistant with this course in schools?

Hi, this course is primarily for those wishing to register as a childminder. It would give you knowledge about the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), including child development, safeguarding and observing and recording development. The EYFS applies to children in reception year so some of will be of use if you are working with this age group but it's really aimed at home based care, Kind regards, Elaine

Marian asked:

Hi, how long it will take to complete this course, is any chance to accelerate the process, thank you!

Answer:

Hello Marian, The course has 5 modules, it will take around 3-4 hours per module, so around 15 or 20 hours in total to complete. As it is an online course, how quickly you can complete is determined only by how much time you have each day/week to dedicate to it, as you determine when you start and the time you have free to do the course. We have known people complete in a weekend if they can clear their days of other daytime tasks. Hope this helps.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
